Germany, Stuttgart – Supported young talent with numerous offers and boosts careers
AMB 2016 supports young talent with numerous offers and boosts careers
The “Battle for the Brightest Minds” is in full swing. The demographic development and the trend towards industrial training as a course of studies do not allow the metal working industry to sit back. AMB, the international exhibition for metal working, also devotes itself to this topic with numerous programme features. From 13 to 17 September around 90,000 visitors are expected in Stuttgart at the most important industry get-together in the even years.
The special show for young people from the Nachwuchsstiftung foundation of the German Machine Toolbuilders’ Association (VDW) allows visitors to experience manufacturing “up close”. Young people can manufacture and assemble Formula 1 model cars at several stations which form a complete process chain. A new element involves making teachers aware of jobs in the metal working industry ahead of the event. “Teachers are able to arouse more interest in a matter when they themselves are already familiar with the topic”, explains the Commercial Manager Andre Wilms. In cooperation with the machine tools manufacturer Gebr. Heller, the foundation offers teachers of lower secondary level schools in the Stuttgart region training on the topic of CNC machine tools. Here they become familiar with CNC systems and make components themselves. In the final step the participating teachers together with their classes visit the special show for young people at AMB. Interested parties can contact Andre Wilms by telephoning +49 5205 74-2558 or sending an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
MINT skills in the digital age
Representatives from industry and politics and disseminators of the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) meet on 16 and 17 September at the European MINT Convention. The congress “MINT@Europe” on 16 September takes place under the motto “MINT skills in the digital age, concepts and strategies for the skilled workers of tomorrow”. EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger and Thomas Sattelberger, President of “MINT Zukunft schaffen”, among others, will deliver keynote addresses. The coinciding career trade fair and “MINTcommunity” on both days are aimed at young professionals. There they get to know interesting employers and HR decision-makers, as well as international associations, initiatives, projects and networks. The AMB combo ticket also grants visitors access to the career trade fair. More information about the “European MINT Convention” is available online at www.mintcon.eu.
The initiative “think ING.” of the employers’ association Gesamtmetall has been dedicated to the next generation of engineers since 1998. The association wants to enthuse young people for a career in engineering, science and technology from an early age. And where better to do this than at AMB? Think ING. acts as an intermediary between academia and industry. The VDMA Baden-Württemberg receives requests from schools about activities for young professionals at AMB. The contact partner is the Education Officer Saskia Fath, tel. +49 711 22801-22, e-mail email@example.com.
Competitions make managers
WorldSkills, whose German national competitions in the areas of CNC turning and milling are held at AMB, have proven to be a real career springboard. “Many former German champions and participants in professional world and European championships have gone on to hold leading roles in companies or become entrepreneurs themselves”, stated Hubert Romer, President of WorldSkills Germany, at the beginning of the year on the occasion of the 10-year anniversary of the initiative. For example, at the 43rd world championships of WorldSkills 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the winner at AMB 2014 in CNC milling, Patrick Aiple, managed to come 6th and receive a “Medallion for Excellence”. The date for the 44th world championships is already set: It will take place in October 2017 in Abu Dhabi and the two first-place winners from Stuttgart will be there. More information about the competitions is available online at www.worldskillsgermany.com.
The competition “Lathe Operator of the Year” is directed at experienced professionals. This competition is organised by the trade journal “fertigung”. Editor-in-chief Richard Pergler is already looking forward to the high download figures of the “very demanding task”. According to Pergler, one should allocate a full day or day and a half for their machining work. “Based on experience around 20 participants are usually left who submit their solutions; the five best take part in AMB.” In addition to the honour of being Germany’s best lathe operator, they also stand to win attractive prizes, including a trip to the USA as a main prize. This year Haas Automation Europe is a machine partner. Interested parties have until 30 June to download the tasks: www.fertigung.de/2016/04/dreher-des-jahres-2016.
AMB and the trade journal mav are looking for original barbecues under the motto “AMB on Fire”. In addition to technical know-how, AMB exhibitors also bring an abundance of creativity and humour to Stuttgart, as was demonstrated at the previous campaigns “Art meets technology”. This time round it is all about the most creative barbecue. The apprentice workshops of several exhibitors are already busy working meticulously and planning, as Peter Hamberger from the Konradin publishing house knows only too well: “A great deal of money is invested and no efforts are spared, it is a closely contested battle”. In the end he is expecting around 20 participants who will enter their barbecues in the competition. They are assessed by a jury, the editor-in-chief, designers and professional chefs. The mav trophy, certificates and an audience prize are up for grabs. The barbecues are exhibited in the art block at the East entrance.
More than 90,000 visitors and over 1,300 exhibitors are expected at AMB 2016 in Stuttgart, which takes place from 13 to 17 September. On approximately 105,000 square metres of exhibition space, the exhibitors showcase innovations and further developments for metal-cutting machine tools, precision tools, measurement technology and quality assurance, robots, workpiece and tool handling technology, industrial software & engineering, components, assemblies and accessories. AMB 2016 is backed by the professional and conceptual sponsors, the VDMA Precision Tools Association, the VDMA Software Association and the Association of German Machine Tool Manufacturers (VDW).
